Superyacht marina: Porto Montenegro, the new Monaco for superyacht

The number of large yachts under construction has more than tripled during the past ten years. However, the existing ports with the infrastructure to service them are horribly overcrowded, especialy during summer season.
In the Med, most of the harbours were built when the average superyacht size was in the 30-40m range.

Porto Montenegro is located in center of the Mediterranean in Boka Kotorska Bey, one of the largest natural harbors in Europe.
Canadian businessman Peter Munk will parnter with French billionaire Bernard Arnault, Russian businessman, Oleg Deripaska and Jacob and Nathaniel Rothshild to build a new superyacht marina.

According to Tivat on line website, Port Montenegro marina is "spreading on over 250.000 m sq, and will offer 800-bearth marina with full superyacht service facilities, five star hotels, residential, retail and office spaces, casino, golf course, tennis club...".

Canadian paper Globe and Mail says that "a year lease on a super yacht dock would start at €100,000 or more".

Key features:

  • 150 berths for yachts over 30m
  • 20m wide concrete pieres
  • VAT and duty free fuel
  • Euro 260 million investment
  • 18-hole golf course
  • Tivat airport at a few kilometers away
This is certainly a new challenge for traditional superyacht spots like Monaco, Saint Tropez and Cannes...

Superyacht history: MY Kingdom 5KR

One of the rare picture of the superyacht Kingdom 5KR at anchor near Cannes

Shipyard: Benetti - Italy
Design: Bannenberg Design Ltd
Interior designer: L. Sturchio

Year: 1980
Length: 85.65m
Refit: Amels BV shipyard in 1993
Price: US$ 30,000,000 + US$ 55,000,000 for all the luxury extras and equipment
For sale with Burgess in 1987: US$50,000,000, sold to D. Trump £ 15 million in 1987

Previous Names: ex Nabila (named after his daughter actress Nabila Kashogggi), ex Trump Princess
Previous owners: Adnan Kashoggi, Donald Trump (Brunei Sultan?)
Current owner: Saudi businessman Al-Waleed bin Talal, a nephew of the King of Saudi Arabia

The yacht also appeared in the James Bond film "Never say never" under the name "Flying Saucer" and was one of the world's largest private yacht.
The yacht came with the following:
3 elevators
a 12-seat movie theatre
2 saunas
a swimming pool
a discotheque
a jacuzzi
a billard room
11 guest rooms with hand-carved onyx bathroom fixtures and gold-plated door-knobs and a master suite of 4 rooms, the bathroom of which had a solid gold sink...

It is said that the Benetti shipyard almost went in bankrupcy because Kashoggi had demanded a lot of changed: the shipyard never recovered from the losses and was sold to boat builder Azimut in 1984, who then started to build their own boats on the shipyard, still using the traditional name Benetti.

Superyacht marketing and multimedia

Superyacht shipyards and brokerage companies usually have a pretty conservative marketing approach: yachts are mostly promoted to potential clients via glossy brochures as well as websites with poor quality pictures.

As we reported in a previous post, there is an exception with every rule: check out the Lazzara Yacht website for example...

A simple multimedia animation can enhance the client experience as weel as improve competitive positioning: check out this Leopard 34 diaporama...

Saddam Hussein's 270ft superyacht is heading back to Iraq

Saddam's yacht for sale with Burgess for 38,000,000 euros

According to the Miror.co.uk website: "
Saddam Hussein's 270ft superyacht is heading back to Iraq after the Government won a long court battle.

Brokers had wanted to sell the £17million craft - which has everything from a mosque to a mini-submarine and missile launcher - to British or American millionaires, claiming Saddam gave it to the Saudi royal family and then King Abdullah of Jordan.

Cayman island firm Sudeley, part-owned by King Abdullah, told a French commercial court in Nice that it is the legal owner.

But Iraq said it belonged to them.

Now the court - where the yacht is moored close to Saddam's abandoned villas - has ruled Sudeley failed to produce "a single document that establishes ownership by King Abdullah". Amir-Aslani, Iraqi counsel in Paris, said: "Ownership has been ceded to Iraq and our ambassador has come to Nice to put the Iraqi ensign on the boat."

The vessel is an astonishing testament to the tyrant's playboy lifestyle.

It is decorated with mahogany, gold, silver and marble, has a helicopter pad, health clinic with operating theatre, prayer rooms, fountains, gold tapped bathrooms, Jacuzzis, steam rooms, hi-tech entertainment and games cabins. Up to 200 could banquet in a bulletproof glass atrium.

Built in Denmark in 1981, it was named Qadissivat Saddam after a victory over the Persians in 637AD.

Renamed Basra Breeze, it is due to sail to Iraq in days."

Sunreef Yachts : evidence of site theft and criminal fraud

Internet, with website and email, play a crucial role in gaining new market shares and new clients, especially in today's competitve superyacht market.
Sunreef Yachts, the famous super catamaran builder, had their website stolen by criminals from the genuine Polish (Gdansk) Sunreef Yachts company.
Broadly speaking, the marine industry is relatively new with internet marketing and security is not often a concern.
