Superyacht shipyard: a new Russian player?

Following the well known Dutch-Russian Timmerman shipyard, the young Russian shipyard Euroyachting has just launched the 24m motoryacht "Svetlana".

Powered by a single 350Hp VOLVO PENTA engine, this full displacement vessel with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure can accomodate up to 6 people in 2 double cabins and one twin cabin.

The yacht comes with the best European manufacturers equipment (Opacmare, Condaria, VanStin, Maxpower...) and features an interesting garage that can stow an Argo amphibian in lieu of a tender. Furthermore, she was designed with Russian climate in mind and comes with a very good thermal insulation.

The Euroyachting yacht ranges comprises a 24m, a twin screw 25m and a 42m.

Superyacht brokerage: Saddam Hussein's yacht back on the market

Originally named Qadisiyah Saddam, Al Yamamah , after an ancient Arab victory, the vessel was renamed Ocean Breeze after Saddam’s overthrow and finally Basra Breeze after the Iraqi Government won a long court battle.

The 272ft yacht built by a Helsingor shipyard features marble arches, gold faucets, a bulletproof banquet room which seats 200, an operating room and medical suite plus a secret passage running her entire length that would have allowed Saddam to escape to a fast patrol boat...

Basra Breeze is for sale at £20m.

Superyacht market: thought of the day

"As soon as a recession hits, everyone stows the Lamborghinis, puts the yachts in dry dock, cancels the 5,000-guest reaffirmation-of-vows party in the Temple of Luxor--the one where the Rolling Stones were supposed to helicopter in and play "Street Fighting Man"--and starts driving a Prius and stops smoking Cohibas"

Superyacht shipyard: Burger and Sparkman & Stephens to build motorsailer

Burger and Sparkman & Stephens Announce the Development of Motorsailors

October 27, 2008

Burger Boat Company and Sparkman & Stephens are pleased to announce a newly formed collaboration to design and build custom aluminum motorsailers.

Heralding a return to traditional elegance with decidedly modern performance, these vessels will continue the proud heritage that was developed with the construction of the first Sparkman & Stephens designed aluminum yawl built by Burger Boat Company in 1957.

Sparkman & Stephens has a long history of motorsailer design; over 50 designed in 78 years, starting in 1933 with the design of Tamerlane and culminating with a string of very successful motorsailers including Osprey, Sea Angel, Freedom, Galileo, Astral, Mayslyph and Timoneer. These boats are still very active today, sailing the world over.

Burger Boat Company since 1863 has created the prominent heritage of designing and building custom yachts of distinction. Burger’s worldwide fleet is comprised entirely of unique yachts – built one of a kind, one at a time.

Each is built using proven technologies, world-class design principles and unmatched craftsmanship. Burger builds every newly commissioned yacht based upon the dreams of its owner. As a true custom builder, Burger delivers only a limited number of new yachts per year to preserve the exclusivity that comes with owning a unique Burger yacht.

As a builder of custom yachts in lengths to 200’ (60m) and constructed of Alustar™ aluminum or steel it is only a natural for Burger to team up with Sparkman & Stephens, one of the world’s highest acclaimed designers, to re-introduce to the world a Burger built motorsailer.

Today, Sparkman & Stephens has developed three new motorsailers ranging from 90’ to 150’ especially for Burger Boat Company. These vessels draw from years of experience and will feature the latest in technology, state of the art innovation and Burger’s reliability and high quality. The hull and superstructure will be fabricated in Alustar™ aluminum while the interiors of these vessels will feature the high quality construction for which Burger is known.

Sparkman & Stephens designers have incorporated recent advances in computer modeling, rig design and material science into each of these new motorsailers. The design team is well aware that with increased environmental consciousness and diesel prices at an all-time high, a vessel with the tremendous range offered by motorsailers would have an even greater appeal. As a result, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly systems were specified from the very earliest design stages of this exciting new line.

By virtue of their luxury and environmental friendliness and as a direct result of their superior engineering, quality construction and reliability these new motorsailers will be uniquely suited for exploration. With the application of both companies' extensive experience, the motorsailer has been redefined as a highly capable high performance vessel.

Superyacht market: focus on new trends..

Yacht broker incentive

The superyacht market is a bit nervous at the moment because of the credit crunch combined to the subprime crisis. There are many boats for sale on the market and potential clients are taking the time to shop around and negotiate the best deal.

Despite strong results on the back of heavy order book and a great 2007 business year for second hand yachts, we have noticed several secondary new market trends:

1. Owners: "Yacht for sale...but don't tell my neighbour about it!"

2. Clients: "I'll think about it and will get back to you"

3. Brokers: "Owner has indicated that he will consider an offer on the Yacht..."

4. Russians: on hold...

5.

Superyacht berth for sale: berth for sale on the Cote d'Azur...

Marina Baie des Anges near Nice airport

So you are planning to buy a berth for your superyacht ?

On the Cote d’Azur, berth prices have climbed dramatically in the past decade but the overall market appears to have stabilised for the time being. However, there is a gap between the demand and the offer and this is especially true for the berths above 23m.

Fortunately we can give you some quick rules of thumb!

Renting or buying: which is better for you ?
There are many benefits in buying a berth versus renting one :
  • You have exclusive usage of that berth for the length of the berth lease. However, during some special events (Cannes Boat Show for example), the barbour authorities will ask you to temporarily move you yacht.
  • You will usually be entitled to sub-letting rights which can provide an income flow when you are not using the berth yourself. Lessee shall be entitled to sublet their berth only upon approval of the harbour authorities.
  • You have the right to sell your berth lease on whenever you choose.
  • you are sure to have a berth available even during the high season

However, buying a berth requires to make a substantial investment:
Golfe Juan Camille Rayon price guide
40x9m: 5.5M euros (available)

Antibes Port Vauban price guide
15x5m: 250-300K euros (available)
23x6m in : 500-620K euros
30m: 1,5-1,7M euros

Baie des Anges price guide
12.96x4m: 98K euros (available)

What to consider before buying a berth ?
  1. All purchases are subject to the exact wording of the Berth Lease document.
We always recommend the use of a lawyer to oversee the correct legal transfer of ownership of any berth lease
  2. Is there any parking lot nearby ?
  3. What services are offered: shuttle, water, electricty, pump out ?
  4. Are there any shops nearby?
  5. Is there any known safety issue ?
  6. Is your Captain happy with the berth ? ie is there room for manœuvre ?
  7. How much is the annual service charge ?
  8. How much is the transfer fees ?
Usually, the 5.09% Tresor Public fee comes on the top of the asking price.
  9. Are there any other fees ?
some harbours authorities will charge you with other fees: contingency fund, yacht club subscription…
  10. How long is the lease ?
Our advice
Please read the following important information :
  • There is usually a tolerance of 10% on the yacht length…
  • You can rent a berth in the following harbours but there are no berths for sale :
    Cannes Vieux Port
    Cannes Port Canto
    Golfe Juan Vieux Port
  • We suggest not to buy any berth in the following harbour unless radical action is taken by the appropriate authorities: Saint Laurent du Var

Lease term
  • Cogolin : 11 years
  • Mandelieu la Rague: 13 years
  • Mandelieu la Napoule: 16 years
  • Golfe Juan - Juan les Pins Port Galice: 9 years
  • Golfe Juan Camille Rayon: 16 years
  • Antibes Port Vauban: 13 years
  • Baie des Anges : 12 years
  • Cap d’Ail : 19 years
  • Menton Garavan : 7 years
  • Beaulieu : 10 years

Superyacht regulation: the hull design protection act

Article from Boating Industry
Friday October 17, 2008

WASHINGTON – President George W. Bush has signed the Vessel Hull Design Protection Act Amendments of 2008 into law, providing boat manufacturers with increased protection from intellectual property violations that occur through “hull splashing,” the National Marine Manufacturers Association reported yesterday.

“The VHDPA Amendments recognize the great amount of time and money that goes into developing state-of-the-art vessels,” said National Marine Manufacturers Association president Thom Dammrich. “This new and improved VHDPA is a huge step forward in protecting the intellectual property of boat manufacturers.”

NMMA has been working diligently through three sessions of Congress over six years to strengthen and clarify the Vessel Hull Design Protection Act of 1998, which was the first industrial design protection statute of its kind. Because of the way a hull was defined in the original legislation and subsequent court opinions, enforcement had been curtailed because of the difficulty in proving infringement, NMMA said.

The VHDPA Amendments correct this technical issue, allowing boat manufacturers the full protection originally intended in the 1998 VHDPA.

For information on VHDPA, contact NMMA counsel Bryan Zumwalt at (202) 737-9764; bzumwalt@nmma.org.

Superyacht shipyard: Broward Marine to stop building yachts

Superyacht business: a new fractional superyacht company

Rendering of the 33m catamaran

Curvelle is a new company which has just been launched and offers shared ownership of a superyacht...catamaran built in China by Cheoy Lee.

According to the company website "
Curvelle luxury power catamarans are created with the twin pleasures of absolute comfort and unbeatable performance always in sight. Our yachts cruise equally well at speeds between 10 and 25 knots and, because of their highly efficient hull design, use far less engine power and fuel. And with about 50% more space to play with than a comparable monohull, a Curvelle is in a class of its own.

For one million Euros you become a Fractional owner of a brand new Curvelle 33x9 model and you can cruise for five weeks in the Med and Caribbean - every year."

Rendering of the 41 m catamaran

With their versatile layout, the six double cabins can be swiftly changed to three suites or a combination of twin cabins depending on the wishes of you and your guests.

At the same time, YachtPlus, formed in 2005 by a group of financial investors, announced that it will be launching its first 41m superyacht designed by Sir N. Foster, at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Fractional ownership is not a new idea and has proved to be a succesfull business especially with the sailboats.
Will the subprime crisis and the general slowdown of the economy boost the superyacht fractional ownership business?
Not sure...

Superyacht market Vs Jet Market

Wally steering wheel

According to investors, a mature market is a market that has reached a state of equilibrium marked by the absence of significant growth...or a lack of innovation.

Is the superyacht market a mature market?

For several years now, the yachting press have been reporting record sales & charter activity and stressed the lack of infrastructure as well as the lack of qualified crew.
Meanhwhile, the recent mergers & acquisitions between key players (brokerage companies and shipyards) signal a rising wave of consolidation in the superyacht market.
Following the consolidation of the Italian market with key players like Ferretti Group and Azimut Benetti, L Capital acquired Princess yachts and LVMH recently purchased Royal Van Lent. In the Netherlands, the Heesen shipyard has also been sold to an international investment group.

At the same time, superyacht shipyards are growing like mushroom in Turkey and in China.

Will there be any benefit for the buyer/owner?

It is certainly to early to answer this question; however, we thought it could be a good idea to have a look at the jet market.

Founded in 1984 as an independent company, Central Business Jets is sought after by Fortune 500 companies to multi-national firms to individuals for its expertise in client representation of a business jet sale and/or acquisition.

Central Business Jets provides valuable information to educate their clients through their Jetcraft reprt: general market trend, aircraft operating cost, average fuel burnt per hour, Average Total Operating Costs Per Flight Hour...

You can download a sample valuation report here.

In spite of the facts that many superyachts are higly customized goods and that many yacht brokers are affected with paranoid syndrom, we believe that relevant information could drastically benefit to potential purchasers.
